Wisdom and Beauty overcome Sadness

I could not tell why, when I was a child, Gente di Dublino (the Italian translation of Dubliners) by James Joyce appealed to me so strongly, on a shelf of my older sister's bookcase, but I can surely say that I was already fascinated by Dublin and Ireland.

I read Dubliners in my early teens for the first time and the short story I have always preferred (and, for me, also the Joyce's work which is the most deeply rooted in my heart) is The Dead. I have find on YouTube a very good audiobook version of this poignant short story, narrated by Tadhg Hynes.

Below, two pictures taken by me yesterday and today in my favourite Parisian park where there are flowers in every season.

"Bloomerang" Lilac (in italian, it is called lillà or serenella) which flourish twice in a year: in Spring and in Autumn. Detail and the whole picture, resized and signed with my pseudonym, as usual.

White hortensia (hydrangea; ortensia in italian) and blurred pink hortensia.

Below, two little artworks made by me yesterday and today.

In the first drawing, for All Saints' Day (Tutti i Santi or Ognissanti in italian), I have drawn some unofficial Saints: a stillborn baby boy with a little bird killed by a hunter; a "little lamb on a hill"; an unknown migrant woman with her little child who drowned during a seastorm, while they were attempting to join Lampedusa; a calf with his mother and a beagle tortured for animal testing; Mahsa Amini and Matthew Shepard; an orphaned baby elephant who died of starvation; the well-known Anne Frank, who is still victim of antisemitism, many decades after her deportation and death in Auschwitz; and a dove, symbol of Peace.

Drawing and text made by me today, on All Souls' Day - it is called Commemorazione dei Defunti in Italian, but I must confess that I prefer the English name.

Picture taken without flash.

Closing the circle, I come back to Dublin and mourning with this article I have written and illustrated last June.
